According to a Bloomberg report citing sources familiar with the matter, Alibaba Group Holding Ltd. is set to revamp its flagship mobile AI application in the coming months, aiming to make it more similar to OpenAI’s ChatGPT as part of a larger strategy to keep up with competitors and eventually monetize individual users.
The company will begin by overhauling its current “Tongyi” apps on iOS and Android, rebranding them as “Qwen,” which draws on Alibaba’s recognized AI model, according to individuals familiar with the plans.
Over time, Alibaba intends to introduce agentic-AI capabilities to these apps, enabling enhanced shopping experiences on its platforms, such as the main Taobao marketplace, the sources said.
