Japan’s PM Ishiba in Hot Seat as Approval Rating Drops to All-time Low

Japan Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba is in a difficult position as his support hit a record low, following a dissatisfaction in the government’s action of handling the rising rice price issues.

According to the Kyodo news agency, the support for Ishiba’s government has fallen from 32.6% in April to 27.4%. Furthermore, 87.1% of respondents also stated his coalition did not do enough to prevent soaring prices of rice.

The extreme heat and the rising demand due to tourism booming have doubled the retail rice prices YoY. If Ishiba cannot address this soon, his ruling Liberal Democratic Party and coalition partner Komeito may lose several seats in the up-coming election on the upper house this July.
