Iran Plans to Exit Global Nuclear Pact amid Rising Tension with Israel

Iran announced its plan to leave the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons Treaty (NPT) following the escalation attack in the conflict against Israel and amid the G7 meeting.

Today, Esmaeil Baghaei, Iranian foreign ministry spokesperson, announced that the nation’s parliament is preparing a bill to leave the nuclear NPT but reassure that the nation still opposes the development of weapons with mass destruction capability.

The statement came as the new conflict between Israel and Iran entered the fourth day. The event began on Friday when Israel began an operation called “Rising Lion,” launched several airstrikes at multiple Iran’s nuclear program sites.

These attacks killed about 224 people, with 90% of them being civilians, according to Iran’s health ministry. Some of Iran’s high ranking military officers were also killed, such as general Mohammad Bagheri and major general Hossein Salami.

In retaliation, Iran has been launching several airstrikes against Israel. The latest attack happened on Monday’s dawn, when missiles hit Israel’s Tel Aviv and Haifa. Israel’s national emergency services stated that since Friday, the death toll had reached 23, all of which were civilians.

This conflict is now expected to become the main topic being discussed at the meeting of the Group of Seven leaders in Canada. German Chancellor, Friedrich Merz , also said that Iran’s nuclear development, Israel’s right to defend, and matters related to this conflict are now his main agenda for this meeting.

As for Israel’s main allies like the U.S., President Donald Trump has announced his praise of Israel’s offensive but rejected U.S.’ involvement in the operation. Sources also stated that Trump had vetoed Israel’s plan on assassinating Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.

In addition, Trump also stated that Iran could end the conflict if the nation launched a tougher restriction on its nuclear programme. Still, Iran recently stated that it has no plan on developing nuclear weapons but aims for nuclear energy.
