On September 17 to 19 , China will host its Beijing Xiangshan Forum, with a goal of pushing for President Xi Jinping’s vision of a new world order as he called for unity against the U.S.’ hegemonism and power politics.
Xinhua news agency reported that about 1,800 representatives from 100 countries will participate in this security forum. However, most western nations stated that they will send low-level delegations, with the U.S. promised to send its defence attache from Beijing’s embassy. Meanwhile, Singapore and Malaysia reported that they will send their defence ministers.
For them, especially those from western and neighbouring countries, this is an opportunity to learn the capacity of China’s military might as analysts still question the operation and effectiveness of its new weapons. Furthermore, in recent years, the country has undergone military restructure as more than a dozen Chinese generals have been removed from their positions.
This seminar will be held amidst tension that erupted across East Asia. Last week, China tested its most advanced aircraft carrier, the Fujian, in South China Sea near Taiwan, while U.S. and Japan ran a military drill with the Typhon missile system and other advanced anti-ship weapons on Okinawa, an island that is not far away from China’s mainland.
