Asian Stocks Trade in Mixed Sessions after China’s Disappointing Economic Data

Major stock markets in Asia traded in a mixed session on Monday as China reported disappointing economic data for April in the early morning.

As of 9:45 local time in Thailand on May 16, 2022, Nikkei rose 0.16%, SSEC fell 0.20%, Hang Seng Index dropped 0.09%, ASX 200 increased 0.10% and IDX Composite slipped 0.023%.

Markets in Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia are closed for a holiday.

China’s retail sales plunged more than expected, dropping by 11.1% in April from a year ago, higher than the 6.1% decline forecast by Reuters poll.

Meanwhile, industrial production fell by 2.9% in April from the same period of last year, which was the opposite of a 0.4% increase by economists.

China has been struggling in the past few months as the country tried to keep the resurgence of Covid-19 outbreak under control by imposing lockdown restrictions and mass Covid tests.
