Despite the rise of battery-electric car sales in Europe, Tesla has failed to make a gain as its sales continue to drop for the fourth straight month.
According to the European Automobile Manufacturers Association (ACEA)’s data, the sales of battery-electric vehicles (BEV) in April rose 27.8% YoY, with the registrations of BEV, plug-in hybrid (PHEV) and hybrid-electric (HEV) cars since January to April 2025 adding by 3.3%, 0.7% and 6.4% YoY, respectively.
As for Tesla, its April sales in the region, however, had fallen by 49% YoY, with its European market share slipping from 1.3% last year to 0.7%. This was due to the opposition against the role of CEO Elon Musk in politics, the low reception of the new Model Y, and the high competition.
Meanwhile, its rivals like SAIC Motor and Mitsubishi, all saw their car registration increase by 24.5% and 22.1% from the figures in March, respectively. Mazda, however, saw the figure drop by 24.5%.
Still, the EV’s sales may have risen and have increased the account of EU total passenger car registrations from 47.7% last year to 59.2%, they are still not enough to prevent the slight drop in the overall car sales in April of 0.3% YoY, having decreased 1.2% so far this year.
