Political turmoil in France continued as protests erupted across the country in just a few days after former prime minister Francois Bayrou was ousted from his position and replaced with Sebastien Lecornu, President Emmanuel Macron’s close ally and defense minister.
Lecornu became the fifth prime minister of France in less than two years, or four in just 12 months. Still, certain discontented citizens stated that it is Macron who is the problem while many march the street, demanding Macron to resign.
The protesters have gathered under the banner of the “Block Everything” movement. French media reported that hundreds of thousands of people are expected to take part. Meanwhile, French authorities deployed 80,000 security forces across the country.
The movement emerged from the resentment over Bayrou’s budget cut plan, the same proposal that led to his loss in the confidence vote. His intention was to address the budget deficit, which stands at 5.8% of GDP in 2024.
