A fire erupted at Chevron’s El Segundo oil refinery in Los Angeles County, according to an announcement from California Governor Gavin Newsom’s office on Thursday via X. Authorities have not yet confirmed the cause of the blaze as the source remains under investigation.
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass stated that the city’s fire department is standing by and ready to provide support if required. She emphasized that operations at Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) have so far not been affected by the incident.
Citing broadcaster CBS, emergency personnel, including police and firefighters, responded to the refinery following reports of an explosion. Meanwhile, El Segundo police indicated that there were no immediate reports of injuries or evacuations as of Thursday night.
According to Chevron’s website, the El Segundo facility has a refining capacity of 290,000 barrels per day, producing primarily gasoline, jet fuel, and diesel. The complex houses roughly 150 major tanks, with a total storage capacity of 12.5 million barrels.
