Thai PM Reiterates Preconditions for Trump-Mediated Cambodia Peace Talks

A government house correspondent reported that Anutin Charnvirakul, Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, addressed the Thai–Cambodia peace talk following the U.S. President Donald Trump’s offer to preside over the peace agreement signing.

Anutin stated that Thailand is in the process of drafting a formal response to President Trump, expressing the nation’s desire for both Thailand and Cambodia to negotiate a resolution to the dispute.

President Trump has sent a letter expressing his wish to see Thailand and Cambodia settle their dispute through negotiations, said Anutin. The Prime Minister has replied that if Cambodia accepts Thailand’s four primary conditions, the administration is ready to proceed with the appropriate process.

He further emphasized that Thailand must stand firm on these four points as they directly concern national security and public safety.

When asked by reporters about the possibility of completing the peace signing within the timeframe suggested by President Trump—by the end of October—Anutin responded, whether it can be done in time depends on Cambodia. If they are ready and simply make a call to comply with the four conditions, it won’t be a complicated matter.

The Prime Minister added that Parliament’s ad hoc committee is currently reviewing the pros and cons of canceling the 2000 and 2001 memoranda of understanding (MOU) to find comprehensive solutions for the Thai–Cambodia border issue.

He stressed that this process is under the responsibility of the legislative branch, while the government is prepared to listen and support proceedings step by step. Both chambers have established commissions to study the matter, and all actions must proceed cautiously and systematically.

Thailand’s four primary conditions are as follows:

  1. Withdrawal of heavy weaponry from the disputed area.
  2. Removal of landmines along the border.
  3. Suppression of scam networks and transnational fraud.
  4. Organization of the border area and relocation of encroachers from Thai territory.
