The selloff in the electronics sector reflected the global investment atmosphere in technology and semiconductor shares, which have also seen risk-off selling due to concerns over their elevated valuations and the sustainability of infrastructure investments in artificial intelligence (AI) by major tech companies.
On July 29, SK Hynix, a major memory chip manufacturer from South Korea, announced its operating profit for 2Q26 at KRW 60.5 trillion, an increase of over sixfold from the same period last year. However, this figure came in below market expectations of KRW 64 trillion, leading SK Hynix’s stock to close down 9.6% and dragging the KOSPI index down by 6%. Investors remain worried about the sustainability of AI-related investment, despite the company’s reassurance that demand for AI memory chips remains strong.
The sell-off then spread to the U.S. stock markets. On Wednesday, Nasdaq dropped 1.7%, while the PHLX Semiconductor Index (SOX) plunged 5.3%, following the Federal Reserve’s decision to keep interest rates unchanged and the 30-year US Treasury yield surging above 5.2%—a factor pressuring high-growth stock valuations.
This sentiment prompted investors to reduce their positions in Thai electronic components stocks. Data from the Stock Exchange of Thailand at 10:33 a.m. indicated the Electronic Components Index (ETRON) slumped 7.04%, while the Technology Index (TECH) dropped 4.41%.
Meanwhile, DELTA continued to face specific pressure from the market’s response to its 2Q26 financial results, resulting in a sharp decline in its share price and weighing down the SET index, given DELTA’s high market capitalization. The company has published its management’s discussion and analysis for 2Q26 via its investor relations channel.
