At the Bangkok Business Summit, Mr. Suphachai Chearavanont, Senior Vice Chairman of CP Group, outlined a bold vision to transform Thailand into a regional technology and agricultural leader, arguing that investments in artificial intelligence, education, and sustainable capital can help the nation overcome its economic challenges.
Mr. Suphachai urged Thailand to shift its agricultural focus from basic commodities to a demand-driven model. He highlighted durian as a massive success, noting that fresh durian exports alone are worth $4 billion, nearly rivaling the country’s entire rice production value of approximately $5 billion.
By embracing smart farming, AI, and automation, Thailand can increase agricultural productivity three to five times and create high-skill knowledge jobs. “Food in the future will be medicine,” he added, encouraging more research and development in health, wellness, and longevity.
To remain competitive, Mr. Suphachai stressed that businesses and the nation must transform. He proposed establishing a five-level ecosystem for Thailand: energy, data centers, chip management, sovereign AI models, and industry-level AI applications. Within CP Group, digital transformation is already being driven by consolidated data, cloud technology, and AI to optimize B2B processes, logistics, and distributions.
For talent development, Mr. Suphachai suggested a major education reform to engage Thailand’s two million college students. He proposed a startup model providing $10,000 in incentives per 10-man team, for example, to jumpstart AI and automation training among youth.
Furthermore, he detailed a study proposing a 100-billion-baht investment over five years to build innovation centers collocated with five universities. This initiative would focus on critical areas: AI, digital, technology, space technology, robotics, nanomaterial science, and biotechnology. Funding would be split equally among laboratory equipment, contracting renowned global scientists, and research.
To accelerate economic growth, Mr. Suphachai called for deploying ‘inclusive capital’ that addresses climate change, human rights, and social equality. Strategically positioned at the center of Southeast Asia connecting China and the Indian Ocean, Thailand could leverage sustainable investments to become a transport, trade, and financial hub.
Finally, Mr. Suphachai proposed using AI to optimize and empower the public sector. By equipping Thailand’s four million civil servants with AI tools, the government can achieve high levels of transparency and information access, serving as a powerful catalyst to break the low-income trap.
