Toyota Holds Top Global Automotive Spot with Record 2025 Sales

Toyota Motor Corporation posted its highest-ever global vehicle sales in 2025, maintaining its status as the leading global automaker. Strong performance in key regions and continued demand for hybrid models contributed to its leadership in auto sales for a sixth consecutive year.

Total sales, including Toyota and Lexus brands along with subsidiary units Daihatsu and Hino Motors, reached approximately 11.3 million vehicles in 2025, marking a 4.6% rise compared to the prior year. Sales from the core Toyota and Lexus brands alone were up 3.7% to a record 10.5 million units, driven largely by U.S. consumers’ preference for hybrid vehicles.

Hybrid models accounted for about 42% of Toyota’s total global sales, underscoring their importance as a growth segment for the company. Battery-electric vehicles, by contrast, represented a small share at 1.9%.

Toyota’s principal gains stemmed from the United States and Japan, which together made up over 40% of the parent company’s annual sales. In the U.S. market, Toyota and Lexus sales rose 7.3% to nearly 2.93 million vehicles. Exports from Japan to the U.S. increased 14.2%, totaling roughly 615,000 vehicles, with the RAV4 SUV being among the best-sellers.

Despite the challenging trade environment, with President Donald Trump’s administration imposing initial tariffs of 25%—later reduced to 15%—on Japanese automobiles, Toyota managed to maintain its competitive edge. The company absorbed much of the tariff impact internally, keeping broad price increases in check and placing emphasis on optimizing local production and managing costs.

Toyota’s approach to navigating shifting trade policies, combined with solid consumer demand for hybrid models, has helped the automaker reinforce its global leadership as it heads into the next year.
