SET Index Slides as Banking Sector Sell-Offs Weigh on Sentiment, Investors Mull Fund Rotation

On Wednesday, Thailand’s SET Index closed the morning trading session at 1,640.85 points, showing a decrease of 12.12 points or 0.73%, with a trading value of THB 65.95 billion.

Maybank Securities (Thailand) stated that the Thai stock market declined during the morning session, primarily pressured by sell-offs in the banking sector. The downward trend followed the release of second-quarter 2026 earnings results from the banks, which in most cases aligned with market expectations without any significant surprises. This led investors to take profits and rotate capital into other sectors, notably the petrochemical segment, which posted a prominent rise.

Additionally, Maybank observed that there may be a short-term outflow of funds as technology stocks in U.S. and North Asian markets have declined, making their valuations increasingly attractive. This has prompted capital to return to the technology sector, coinciding with a notable rally in the Thai stock market in the preceding period. Consequently, a period of market consolidation may ensue as investors await new positive catalysts.

Looking ahead to the afternoon session, the outlook is for Thai equities to remain in negative territory, with resistance at 1,650 points and support at 1,630 points.
