Tight Interest Margin and Investment Drag Squeeze Bangkok Bank 3Q26 Earnings

Bangkok Bank and its subsidiaries reported a net profit attributable to owners of 9,489 million baht for the third quarter of 2026, representing a 31.2 percent year-over-year decline compared to 13,789 million baht in 3Q25. The earnings contraction was primarily driven by lower net interest income following rate reductions to support borrowers, coupled with a sharp drop in market-driven non-interest income.

Net interest income (NII) fell 5.6 percent year-over-year to 29,041 million baht in 3Q26 from 30,750 million baht in 3Q25. The bank’s net interest margin (NIM) compressed from 2.72 percent in 3Q25 to 2.50 percent in 3Q26 as benchmark interest rate cuts lowered earning asset yields. Non-interest income plunged 31.2 percent year-over-year to 11,634 million baht. This decline resulted from a 77.9 percent drop in investment gains (829 million baht) and a 52.9 percent decrease in gains on financial instruments measured at FVTPL (2,575 million baht). Partially offsetting these headwinds, net fee and service income grew 3.2 percent year-over-year to 6,761 million baht, bolstered by mutual funds, bancassurance, and securities market activity.

Operating expenses edged down 0.9 percent year-over-year to 20,518 million baht. However, top-line revenue pressure pushed the cost-to-income ratio up to 50.4 percent from 43.4 percent in 3Q25. To mitigate profit headwinds, expected credit losses (ECL) decreased 17.8 percent year-over-year to 8,008 million baht.

Total loans expanded 3.2 percent year-to-date to 2,692,861 million baht as of September 30, 2026. Expansion was driven mainly by large corporate borrowers and foreign network lending. Gross non-performing loans (NPLs) stood at 102,850 million baht, keeping the NPL ratio at a manageable 3.2 percent. The bank maintained high balance sheet resilience, with an NPL coverage ratio of 322.1 percent.
