US Will Defend Taiwan from Chinese Invasion, but Not Supporting Taipei Independence, Biden Says

Joe Biden, President of the U.S. said on Sunday, in an interview with CBS “60 Minutes” that the U.S. forces would defend Taiwan if the island is invaded by the Chinese forces, which is the most explicit statement made by the president of the United States so far.

“The President has said this before, including in Tokyo earlier this year. He also made clear then that our Taiwan policy hasn’t changed. That remains true,” the White House spokesperson said.

In the interview, the president reiterated that Washington did not support Taiwanese independence and still committed to a “One-China” policy in which the U.S. officially recognizes Beijing not Taipei.
