Thailand’s political scene took a decisive turn on Friday as Anutin Charnvirakul, leader of the Bhumjaithai Party, garnered majority support from lawmakers in the House of Representatives, all but confirming his ascent as the nation’s 32nd Prime Minister.
Anutin’s path to the premiership was paved by a crucial alliance with the People’s Party, which holds 143 seats in parliament and emerged as the pivotal bloc following the ouster of Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra. This agreement tipped the balance in Anutin’s favor, with the Bhumjaithai chief pledging to honor the People’s Party’s core demands—most notably, a constitutional revision and the dissolution of the current parliament within four months.
Although the official vote tally is not yet complete, initial counts show that over half of those present cast their ballots for Anutin, cementing his transition to the country’s top political post.
