A Thai swine farmer, who preferred to remain anonymous, raises a warning about the potential consequences of allowing imported pork from the U.S. into Thailand. He emphasizes that U.S. pork is often produced on a much larger scale and at significantly lower costs while, over 145,000 to 190,000 Thai pig farmers, many of them smallholders, operate within tight margins.
“If U.S. pork is granted unrestricted access to our market, tens of thousands of Thai farmers could find themselves forced out of business,” he cautions. This scenario would trigger widespread disruption across the agricultural value chain, affecting not just farmers but also their communities and the economy as a whole.
While supporters of trade liberalization tout short-term gains such as consumer savings and diplomatic leverage, the long-term costs could be severe. History has shown that over-reliance on imports leaves nations vulnerable to global supply shocks, price spikes, and loss of disease control.
