Thailand Expects a “Very Good” Trade Deal after Trump Calls Negotiation Back on Table

The U.S. President Donald Trump has announced that following the ceasefire agreement with Cambodia, the negotiation team from Washington will resume a trade deal with Thailand.

On the evening of July 28, 2025, Mr. Phumtham Wechayachai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of the Interior, acting as Prime Minister, announced that he had received a phone call from US President Donald Trump, calling to congratulate on the ceasefire agreement with Cambodia.

President Trump expressed his admiration for Thailand’s open-minded initiative to enter into a peace process with Cambodia. He further affirmed that the United States would support negotiations to end the conflict and was willing to be part of a global partnership for peace.

Mr. Phumtham stated that President Trump praised Thailand’s stance as courageous for choosing nonviolent means as a model for the region. Trump added that joint efforts between Thailand and Cambodia would benefit both nations greatly and reflect their strategic partnership with the United States.

Additionally, Mr. Phumtham mentioned that he had invited President Trump to visit Thailand. The U.S. President expressed interest in coming for further discussions on bilateral cooperation, including trade tariffs, and remarked that he would try his best to address those issues.

Regarding the border situation, Mr. Phumtham said a ceasefire would be implemented according to the agreement at midnight (00:00) tonight. Military leaders from both sides would coordinate to discuss mutual protocols, and it is expected that the overall direction will remain positive, even though skirmishes continue in some areas.

The acting Prime Minister also cited Cambodia’s stance as a key variable after midnight and believes that if Cambodia continues to use violence, it could adversely affect its global image. He emphasized that currently, “the world is on our side,” and Thailand’s sincerity has been widely recognized.

Following the phone call, Trump took the announcement to his Truth Social Platform, praising himself as the President of Peace and that the trade negotiation is now back on the table.

Vorapak Tanyawong, Chairman of the Minister of Finance’s Advisory Board and a delegate in the negotiation team with the U.S. posted on his Facebook saying “Waiting for good news now,” signalling for a positive result from Thailand-US trade deal after the agreement with Cambodia.
