Tensions persisted along the Thai-Cambodian border on Tuesday after the Thai military accused Cambodian forces of breaching a newly established ceasefire, just hours after both leaders pledged to end several days of hostilities.
Thai Army spokesperson Major General Winthai Suvaree reported that Cambodian troops launched assaults at several sites, prompting Thai soldiers to mount proportionate defensive responses.
The flare-up comes on the heels of a high-profile meeting between the leaders of Thailand and Cambodia in Malaysia, where they agreed to bring an end to the bloodiest border conflict in more than ten years.
Despite the ceasefire, both militaries have remained on alert as further negotiations are set to commence. Military representatives from both nations are scheduled to reconvene at 10 a.m. local time in Bangkok on Tuesday, seeking to prevent another spiral of violence after the initial meeting at 7 a.m. was postponed.
