Mozambique and TotalEnergies Restart $20 Billion LNG Project

Mozambique and TotalEnergies marked the formal restart of a major liquefied natural gas (LNG) initiative in Cabo Delgado province on Thursday. The $20 billion project, which had been suspended since 2021 due to security concerns, is being relaunched at a ceremony attended by President Daniel Chapo and TotalEnergies CEO Patrick Pouyanne.

Officials state that the revival of construction at the LNG site stands as an important benchmark for Mozambique’s economy and reflects international partners’ continued confidence in the nation’s energy sector and workforce.

The project had been placed on hold after an Islamist militant attack in northern Mozambique, but TotalEnergies announced at the end of the previous year that conditions were in place to move forward.

TotalEnergies holds a 26.5% stake in the Mozambique LNG venture. Other major investors include Mitsui from Japan with 20%, Mozambique’s ENH at 15%, Bharat Petroleum, Oil India, and ONGC Videsh from India—each with 10%—as well as Thailand’s PTTEP, which owns 8.5%.
