A fire erupted at Viva Energy’s Geelong refinery in Victoria late Wednesday, resulting in disruption to fuel output at one of Australia’s key oil processing facilities. Emergency teams managed to bring the situation under control by Thursday morning.
The incident affected operations at Viva Energy Group Ltd’s refinery, located in Corio near Geelong. According to company representatives, the fire damaged the motor gasoline production unit, compelling the plant to operate at reduced capacity. Production of petrol and aviation fuels is also believed to have been affected.
The Geelong refinery, with a daily processing capability of up to 120,000 barrels, supplies around half of Victoria’s fuel and makes up roughly 10% of the national fuel market. The outage comes as concerns persist over supply shortages, with oil and gas markets already destabilized by the U.S.-Israel conflict with Iran.
