Two people were killed and 20 injured in an overnight Ukrainian drone attack, Moscow region Governor Andrei Vorobyov said Sunday. Damage was reported at the Moscow Oil Refinery and a residential building, while restrictions on flights disrupted the capital’s airports.
The refinery, in Moscow’s Kapotnya district, can process 11 million tonnes of crude annually, placing it among Russia’s biggest refining facilities. Its output accounts for approximately 40% of the capital’s fuel market and meets 70% of the surrounding region’s petrol and aviation gas needs.
Air travel was also affected across Moscow’s four airports. Restrictions were imposed on flights, and business newspaper RBC reported that the number of delayed services since midnight had exceeded 400.
Officials put the number of drones fired into Russia overnight at more than 1,000, with hundreds directed toward Moscow. Separately, Russian authorities claimed to have brought down more than 1,600 drones, including 450 headed for the capital.
Moscow’s mayor said the city had never previously faced a drone assault of this size. He also reported the damage to the refinery and the residential property.
The overnight attack coincided with the conclusion of Russia’s parliamentary voting, which was approaching the end of its third and final day on Sunday.
