US Futures Rise on Optimism over Possible End to Record Government Shutdown

U.S. stock futures edged higher Monday, propelled by gains in the technology sector as the Senate took significant steps toward resolving the lengthy government shutdown that has weighed on economic outlooks.

As of 4:51 PM (GMT+7), futures on the S&P 500 rose 0.99%, or 66.60 points, to 6,795.40 points, while contracts tied to the tech-heavy Nasdaq 100 advanced 1.56%, or 389.70 points, to 25,449.50 points. Dow Jones Industrial Average futures, containing fewer technology stocks, gained 0.48%, or 226.20 points, to 47,213.30 points.

Market sentiment improved following a weekend marked by progress in Washington toward reopening the government. A new funding bill released late Sunday quickly moved forward in a Senate procedural vote, after bipartisan support emerged to push the measure past a filibuster hurdle.

The nearly 40-day government closure has dampened consumer confidence, disrupted federal operations, and led to the postponement of crucial economic data releases—including key inflation figures and the monthly jobs report. Consumer sentiment, already fragile, has nudged just above historic lows.

The proposed legislation, which would extend government funding through January 30 and provide for other appropriations, faces a final Senate vote next. However, its prospects in the House are uncertain. Notably, the agreement excludes any immediate action on renewing healthcare subsidies—a previous demand from Democratic lawmakers.

The rebound in futures follows a volatile week on Wall Street. Major technology shares, including Nvidia, lagged after the sector experienced its sharpest sell-off since April, fueled by concerns about an AI-driven bubble and stretched valuations.

In the week ahead, investors will monitor a fresh round of corporate earnings, with several tech players—including CoreWeave, Oklo, and Rocket Lab—set to report. The health of the entertainment sector will also be in focus, as The Walt Disney Company and Paramount Skydance deliver results.
