Apple has entered into a multiyear collaboration with Alphabet, leveraging Google’s Gemini artificial intelligence platform and cloud technology to bolster its AI functionalities, including a significant enhancement to Siri anticipated later in 2026, according to a joint statement from both companies.
In addition, Apple’s forthcoming foundational AI models will utilize both on-device processing and Apple’s private cloud infrastructure. This initiative signals Apple’s intent to expand its AI offering after largely sitting out the AI investment race that has seen other tech giants accelerate their efforts.
Bloomberg first reported last August that Apple had initiated discussions with Google about incorporating a custom-built Gemini model powering an upgraded version of Siri. Subsequent reports indicated Apple would invest about $1 billion annually to leverage Google’s AI.
This latest pact further cements Google’s resurgence in artificial intelligence, as the company seeks to recapture momentum from competitors like OpenAI. In 2025, Google experienced its strongest year since 2009, overtaking Apple in market valuation for the first time since 2019. As of 2026, Google briefly surpassed a $4 trillion market capitalization following the news of collaboration.
Google already maintains a significant arrangement with Apple, paying the iPhone maker billions annually to remain the default search engine on its devices. However, the relationship faced uncertainty when a court determined Google’s search business constituted an illegal monopoly. In September, a judge ruled against forcing Google to divest its Chrome browser, allowing the company to maintain its existing partnerships, including its deals with Apple.
While companies such as Amazon, Meta Platforms, and Microsoft have heavily invested in AI infrastructure and applications, Apple has delayed its highly promoted Siri AI upgrade to 2026. The company currently incorporates ChatGPT technology from OpenAI for advanced Siri queries and Apple Intelligence features.
Meanwhile, Google has continued expanding its AI footprint, launching the advanced Gemini 3 model. Furthermore, CEO Sundar Pichai noted in October that Google Cloud secured more billion-dollar deals through the third quarter of 2025 than it had in the prior two years combined.
