PTTGC Highlights Map Ta Phut as Regional Base through Collaboration with Toray and Mitsubishi Corp

PTT Global Chemical Public Company Limited (SET: PTTGC) is continuing to build its collaboration with leading Japanese partners, including Toray Industries, Inc. and Mitsubishi Corporation, to accelerate the development of its Green & Bio business. The collaboration ranges from turning agricultural residues into high-value bio-based materials to expanding the market for products derived from PTTGC’s biorefinery to international customers. This aligns with PTTGC’s Map Ta Phut Transformation strategy to position Map Ta Phut as a regionally competitive petrochemical and chemical industrial base, while supporting the long-term transition toward high-value, low-carbon businesses.

This collaboration builds on PTTGC’s key strengths, including its Integrated Value Chain from upstream to downstream, feedstock flexibility, ongoing development of its Green & Bio business, and expansion into Specialty Chemicals. These strengths provide an important foundation for PTTGC to work with regional partners by connecting technology, production, supply chains, markets, and customer needs. This will help create new business opportunities that support both long-term competitiveness and sustainability goals.

Mr. Narongsak Jivakanun, Chief Executive Officer of PTTGC

Mr. Narongsak Jivakanun, Chief Executive Officer of PTTGC, said, “Map Ta Phut is a key production base for Thailand’s petrochemical industry that has been continuously developed over time. It is also the foundation of PTTGC’s competitiveness, supported by our Integrated Value Chain from upstream to downstream, feedstock flexibility, and readiness to further expand into Green & Bio and Specialty Chemicals businesses.”

“Today, industry players across the region share the mutual view that collaboration is essential to upgrading the industry, whether in technology, production, supply chains, market development, or a deep understanding of customer needs. PTTGC therefore aims to use our strong base in Thailand as a connecting point for partners, both domestic and international, to jointly develop new opportunities and drive tangible growth in high-value, low-carbon businesses at the regional level,” Mr. Narongsak added.

One project with significant progress is the collaboration between PTTGC and Toray Industries, Inc., a leading company from Japan, to develop technology that converts agricultural residues in Thailand into raw materials for the production of 100% bio-based nylon 6,6, which can be used in the plastics, textile, and high-performance materials industries. PTTGC has used a bio-fermentation process to convert sugar from non-food agricultural residues into high-value bio-based chemicals and has successfully completed trial production in a 50,000-liter fermentation tank, marking a world-first achievement.

This progress represents an important step in connecting Thailand’s bio-based innovation with Japan’s advanced materials technology. Both companies will continue to study and test scale-up opportunities across various dimensions to prepare for technology readiness, production processes, feedstocks, supply chains, and other supporting factors. The target is to begin pilot-scale production of bio muconic acid and bio-based adipic acid by 2028, before further developing bio-based nylon 6,6 in the future.

Another project is the expanded collaboration between PTTGC and Mitsubishi Corporation, a leading trading and investment company from Japan, to develop business opportunities for bio-based products derived from PTTGC’s biorefinery. Leveraging Mitsubishi Corporation’s capabilities in connecting customers, brand owners, and international markets, this collaboration aims to develop pathways for bringing bio-based products into applications across various industries, while supporting customers in making tangible progress toward their sustainability goals in the future.

Mr. Narongsak further stated, “The collaborations with Toray and Mitsubishi Corporation are two examples of how PTTGC will use its competitiveness to build on partnerships at the regional level. The collaboration with Toray focuses on preparing the foundation for the development of raw materials for future bio-based materials, while another collaboration with Mitsubishi Corporation aims to connect PTTGC’s bio-based products to markets and applications in downstream industries. These collaborations reflect our effort to create a new ecosystem. It is about jointly developing solutions that meet market needs and can contribute to the next phase of Map Ta Phut’s development.”

PTTGC continues to drive the upgrading of Map Ta Phut by leveraging Its Integrated Value Chain and feedstock flexibility, while further developing Green & Bio and Specialty Chemicals. Collaboration with partners will be a key mechanism in creating new opportunities for the industry and supporting the long-term growth of high-value, low-carbon businesses.
