Visa and KTB Now Enable Card Payments on Iconic TukTuks in Bangkok

Visa, a world leader in digital payments, and Krungthai Bank (SET: KTB), one of Thailand’s leading financial institutions, today announced the introduction of card payment acceptance on TukTuks in selected areas of Bangkok. The initiative supports Visa Destinations Thailand, a programme designed to help attract inbound tourists to Thailand’s iconic destinations, while enhancing everyday travel experiences through cashless payment solutions.

By enabling card payments on TukTuks, the collaboration aims to help drivers accept more customers, including international visitors who prefer cashless payments, while allowing tourists to experience one of Thailand’s most traditional modes of transport in a modern and seamless way. The initiative aligns with broader efforts to promote frictionless travel experiences across key touchpoints in Thailand’s tourism journey.

The initiative will begin with a pilot phase in high‑traffic locations across central Bangkok, including major commercial districts, office areas and popular tourist destinations. In 2026, KTB will provide cashless payment system for 60 to 80 TukTuks as part of the initial rollout, laying the groundwork for broader adoption.

Looking ahead, KTB has set an ambition to onboard all TukTuks operating in well‑known and high‑demand areas of Bangkok over the longer term. In parallel, Visa and KTB aim to support further expansion, with a shared ambition to enable card payments on approximately 10-15% of all TukTuks in Bangkok by 2027. Bangkok’s TukTuk ecosystem is estimated to include around 9,000 to 10,000 vehicles citywide.

As part of the initiative, participating TukTuks are equipped with a cashless payment system that supports card payments, enabling passengers to pay easily using their cards without the need for cash. The solution accepts both cards issued by domestic banks and Visa cards from more than 200 countries and territories worldwide, including China, India, Europe, the United States, and the Middle East, allowing travelers of all nationalities to enjoy a smoother, cash-free travel experience. Standard issuer terms and conditions apply.

KTB serves as the lead bank, overseeing merchant onboarding and local deployment, while Visa acts as the technology partner, providing payment network enablement and global expertise to support secure and reliable digital transactions. The collaboration also reflects both organizations’ commitment to working closely with local transport operators and supporting Thailand’s broader digital payments ecosystem.

Anthony Watson, Country Manager, Visa Thailand, said “Everyday transport is part of how people experience a city, and paying for it should feel just as simple. Through our collaboration with KTB, Visa is supporting Visa Destinations Thailand by helping connect iconic local journeys with a global digital payments ecosystem, making travel experiences more intuitive for visitors while enabling TukTuk drivers to accept payments with greater convenience.”

As one of Thailand’s leading banks, Krungthai Bank is committed to leveraging innovation and technology to develop financial products and services that meet the needs of all customer segments, helping improve the quality of life for Thais every day. Extending card payments to TukTuks not only supports urban transport operators but also contributes to a more seamless experience for both Thai consumers and international visitors. Our goal is to progressively expand cashless access across well‑known TukTuk areas in Bangkok.

This TukTuk card payment initiative underscores Visa and KTB’s shared commitment to advancing Thailand’s digital payments landscape, empowering small merchants, and enabling more seamless urban mobility in the capital.
