Nigeria rejected the U.S.’ request of taking in Venezuelan deportees while five African nations were also pressured to accept this type of request this week.
After the U.S. President Donald Trump began his second presidential term in January, he has been doubling down on immigration issues, accelerating the deportations process. One of his methods is to send the migrants to third nations when the U.S. cannot return them to their home countries.
This week, Trump met with the leaders of five African nations, including Liberia, Senegal, Guinea-Bissau, Mauritania and Gabon. According to sources, he asked them to accept the migrant the U.S. deported and presented them with the plan to take the migrant in.
At the BRICS summit, Yusuf Tuggar, the Nigerian foreign minister, announced that his country cannot accept the deported Venezuelans, citing his own nation’s problem. It is likely that Tuggar was talking about the overpopulation issue as Nigeria has a population of 230 million.
