Thai Court Dismisses Royal Insult Case Against Former PM Thaksin

Thailand’s judiciary on Friday dismissed charges against former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who had been accused of breaching the nation’s stringent lese majeste laws. This ruling marks a critical victory for the influential political leader.

Originating from a contentious 2015 interview with foreign media, the case had been initiated by the military, known for its pro-royalist stance. Throughout the proceedings, Thaksin consistently refuted any unlawful behavior and continually professed his loyalty to the Thai monarchy.

Despite the court’s decision being communicated through legal representatives, an official public announcement has not yet been issued. This development adds another chapter to Thaksin’s long-standing legal battles, underscoring the complex interplay of politics and judiciary in Thailand.

The ruling on Thaksin’s hospital stay will be on 9 September.
