U.S. President Donald Trump arrived in Malaysia this weekend to finalize what he described as a major diplomatic achievement while simultaneously extending condolences to Thailand, following the passing of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit The Queen Mother.
In a post on Truth Social, President Trump announced that he was en route to Malaysia to sign what he called the “great Peace Deal”, which he said he “proudly brokered between Cambodia and Thailand.” The signing ceremony was scheduled to take place immediately upon his arrival in order to “accommodate everyone for this major event.”
During his visit, he is also expected to meet Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and attend a working dinner with ASEAN leaders, as part of broader regional engagement efforts.
The President’s arrival coincided with somber news from Thailand, where Her Majesty Queen Sirikit The Queen Mother passed away peacefully on Friday, 24 October 2025, at the age of 93.
According to a statement from the Bureau of the Royal Household, Her Majesty had been receiving treatment for septicemia since 17 October 2025, before her condition gradually deteriorated.
In his remarks, President Trump expressed his “deep condolences to the Great People of Thailand,” adding that he looked forward to meeting Thailand’s “wonderful Prime Minister” upon arrival.
President Trump’s visit to Malaysia marks the beginning of a wider diplomatic tour across Asia, aimed at strengthening bilateral and regional ties.
The White House confirmed that the President will hold a bilateral meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping next Thursday in Thailand, during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) CEO Summit.
Before that, President Trump is scheduled to travel to Tokyo on Monday for talks with Japan’s newly appointed Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi, followed by a visit to Seoul on Wednesday to meet South Korean President Lee Jae Myung.
The highly anticipated meeting with President Xi comes amid escalating U.S.–China trade tensions, which intensified earlier this month after Beijing imposed new restrictions on rare-earth mineral exports. Despite the growing friction, President Trump has recently signaled cautious optimism about the potential for a renewed trade agreement.
