A vessel reported being hit by a projectile in the Strait of Hormuz on Saturday, according to the United Kingdom’s maritime security agency. The incident occurred as the United States and Iran exchanged strikes, marking the most severe escalation since both countries agreed to a temporary peace.
Each nation accused the other of violating the interim agreement that was reached two weeks ago to halt hostilities related to the four-month conflict. The U.S. government stated it carried out airstrikes against Iranian targets overnight. In response, Tehran announced it had targeted locations it associates with U.S. forces on Saturday.
The recent cycle of attacks began when the U.S. military struck Iran on Friday following President Donald Trump’s accusation that Iran had broken the ceasefire by initiating drone attacks against ships in the strategically significant Strait of Hormuz.
Iranian authorities condemned the American air raids, stating they targeted several sites along Iran’s southern coastline and undermined the memorandum of understanding that ended the war. Iran’s Foreign Ministry formally described the U.S. military action as a serious violation of Article 2(4) of the United Nations Charter and the terms of the June 18 agreement ending the conflict, emphasizing Tehran’s recognized right to respond under international law.
A report from Bloomberg indicated that the U.S. conducted its retaliatory strikes one day after Iran targeted a commercial vessel in the Strait of Hormuz, with both sides’ actions jeopardizing the fragile truce. The U.S. Department of Defense postponed publicly revealing details of its strikes until after the U.S. stock market closed on Friday, a decision reportedly made to minimize immediate effects on financial markets.
