OpenAI Rolls Out Agentic Capabilities for ChatGPT Users as Competition Intensifies

OpenAI, the Microsoft-backed AI powerhouse, has introduced a new agent for its ChatGPT platform, enabling the chatbot to autonomously handle complex, multi-step tasks—a move aimed at cementing the company’s leadership in a rapidly intensifying AI competition.

Starting Thursday, subscribers to ChatGPT’s Pro, Plus, and Team tiers can tap into these newly-launched “agentic” features.

Unlike traditional digital assistants, AI agents are designed to operate with higher autonomy, combining deep research capabilities and advanced web interaction.

OpenAI’s offering builds on previous agentic prototypes, merging the early “operator”—which navigated websites—and “deep research” tools that empowered the bot to conduct layered, sophisticated research.

The result is a ChatGPT that can, for instance, order a wedding outfit that factors in real-time weather and prescribed dress codes, automating every digital interaction along the way.

This is powered by a virtual computer environment, giving ChatGPT access to online resources and allowing optional integrations. Users can connect Gmail, Github, and other apps, enabling the agent to retrieve pertinent information and take actions as prompted.

Big tech firms across the sector—including Microsoft, Salesforce, and Oracle—are in the midst of an AI-powered transformation, with billions flowing into agentic technology to streamline workflows and optimize corporate operations.
