OpenAI, the Microsoft-backed artificial intelligence company behind ChatGPT, is in discussions with potential local partners to establish a substantial data center in India with at least 1 gigawatt of capacity, according to Bloomberg News, citing unnamed sources.
The move signals an aggressive step in expanding OpenAI’s Stargate-branded infrastructure across Asia as the firm ramps up its presence in the region.
The company has recently registered as a legal entity in India and started building a domestic team, with plans to open its first office in New Delhi later this year. This expansion underscores India’s position as OpenAI’s second-largest market by user base.
While specifics on the timeline and site selection for the proposed data center remain unclear, Bloomberg reports that CEO Sam Altman may provide more details—potentially even announce the facility—during his scheduled trip to India in September.
OpenAI’s plans are part of the broader Stargate project, a private sector initiative announced in January by the U.S. President Donald Trump and backed by heavyweight investors including SoftBank, OpenAI and Oracle, with an investment goal of up to $500 billion for global AI infrastructure.
