On February 17, Lalida Periswiwatana, Deputy Spokesperson for the Office of the Prime Minister, revealed that the Cabinet has approved the draft cooperation program between Thailand’s Ministry of Energy and the International Energy Agency (IEA) for 2026–2027, as proposed by the Ministry of Energy.
The Cabinet also approved the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Energy, or a designated representative, to sign the aforementioned cooperation program on February 17–18, 2026, in Paris, France.
This program builds upon previous collaborations and aims to enhance Thailand’s energy capabilities over two years, covering key areas such as: exchange of information and energy statistics according to international standards, readiness preparation for energy emergencies, promotion of efficient energy use, development of energy policies and modeling, expansion of renewable energy, electricity and digital systems, as well as cooperation in low-carbon energy technology and greenhouse gas emission reduction.
Furthermore, the program also covers regional and global cooperation, including the preparation of the Southeast Asia Energy Outlook report, review of ASEAN’s energy security, personnel exchange, training, and continuous enhancement of Thailand’s energy capabilities.
Lalida further stated that this cooperation plan serves as a policy and academic cooperation framework. It does not create binding international legal obligations and does not impose commitments upon future Cabinet administrations. The Ministry of Energy has already allocated a budget to support the implementation of the plan.
The Thailand–IEA cooperation will help elevate the management of the country’s energy sector, support the formulation of energy policies in line with global directions, strengthen energy security, and accelerate the transition to clean energy towards the Net Zero greenhouse gas emissions goal, alongside Thailand’s sustainable economic growth.
