US Futures Mixed as Investors Await Fed Minutes and Retail Earnings

U.S. equity futures were mixed at the start of the week, with market participants preparing for several high-profile retail earnings releases and monitoring upcoming Federal Reserve meeting minutes. Volatility in the energy market and renewed debate over artificial intelligence sector spending also weighed on sentiment.

At 4:40 p.m. (Bangkok Time), Nasdaq futures advanced 0.44%, S&P 500 futures recorded a modest gain of 0.13%, while Dow futures slipped by 0.12%. This followed the S&P 500’s recent record-setting performance, supported by strong earnings announcements that have maintained positive market sentiment, even as geopolitical risks in the Middle East persist and uncertainty around AI investments grows.

Recent data reflecting weaker retail sales and softer-than-expected inflation have eased concerns regarding an imminent Federal Reserve rate increase.

Investors are also closely following developments in energy markets, as Brent crude oil climbed to $89.14 a barrel on Monday, while West Texas Intermediate crude futures edged 0.18% higher to $82.55 from ongoing tensions around the Strait of Hormuz. A key agreement intended to limit U.S.-Iran hostilities is set to expire on Monday, with renewal prospects appearing unlikely.

This week features a lighter economic calendar but includes notable catalysts such as the release of Federal Reserve meeting minutes scheduled for Wednesday. Major retailers are also set to report quarterly results, with Walmart’s earnings expected Thursday. Home Depot and Lowe’s will share their financial updates on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively.

Market participants are monitoring additional economic indicators, including the August reports for the Empire State manufacturing index and the NAHB Housing Market Index, for further insight into U.S. economic conditions.
