Holiday Visitors Lift Weekly Tourism Figures while Long-Term Outlook Remains Muted

Finansia Syrus Securities (FSS) reports that international tourist numbers in Thailand reached 565,319 for the week of September 8–14, averaging 80,800 arrivals per day. This reflects an 11% increase week-on-week, but an 11% decrease year-on-year, marking the 32nd straight week of annual decline. The fall in visitors also accelerated compared to the prior week.

According to the brokerage, the week-on-week uptick was largely underpinned by higher numbers from Malaysia and Japan, as travelers from these countries took advantage of extended domestic holidays.

In contrast, Chinese tourist arrivals continued their downward trend, dropping 1% from the previous week and 38% year-on-year, averaging 9,560 daily and representing just 12% of all visitors, down from 13% the week prior.

Non-Chinese arrivals climbed 13% week-on-week, but were still 6% lower than the same period last year, with an average of 71,200 arrivals per day.

Malaysia led the top five source markets with a 67% weekly jump, followed by China (-1% WoW), India (+12% WoW), Japan (+30% WoW), and South Korea (-6% WoW).

The outlook for the coming week suggests a likely decrease in visitor numbers as the seasonal holiday window closes. Finansia Syrus expects the broader trend to persist, forecasting a decline in tourist arrivals both month-on-month and year-on-year for September 2025.

From January 1 through September 14, Thailand has welcomed 22.95 million international visitors, representing 69% of Finansia’s revised annual forecast of 33.37 million (-6% YoY), generating THB 1.06 trillion in revenue. The firm projects September 2025 arrivals at 2.24 million (-13% MoM, -11% YoY), third-quarter arrivals at 7.44 million (+4% QoQ, -13% YoY), and the nine-month total at 24.12 million, down 8% year-on-year.
