BDMS Ranks 1st in DJSI Index Healthcare Provider and Services Sector 2023

From the results of S&P Global’s 2023 sustainability rankings of leading companies around the world in the DJSI or Dow Jones Sustainability Indices, Bangkok Dusit Medical Services Public Company Limited or BDMS was ranked 1st in the world (DJSI WORLD Index) and emerging markets (DJSI Emerging Markets Index) and received the highest score in social dimensions in the Healthcare Provider and Services Sector.

This DJSI Index focuses on evaluating business sustainability in three areas: environmental protection, social care, and good governance principles, which BDMS has always complied with. BDMS delivers medical services following international standards while striving to reduce inequality and give access to treatment without discrimination in all forms. According to the organization’s strategy consistent with sustainable development, BDMS has executed a medical innovations project called BDMS Innovative Healthcare, telemedicine services for mental health called BeDee Tele Mental Health, and environmental management called BDMS Green Healthcare, etc.

BDMS Innovative Healthcare’s strategy, considered a proud innovation achievement, includes supporting research to improve the efficiency of hip replacement surgery. A new technique that does not cut the muscle, known as the Direct Anterior Approach Hip Replacement (DAA), helps reduce the recovery time for patients by more than 50 percent, improving the quality of life for those undergoing treatment, especially in the elderly group.

In further building upon this success, BDMS has also established a training program on innovative hip replacement surgery techniques in collaboration with medical schools, regional hospitals, and provincial hospitals nationwide. There are more than 180 trained doctors in 170 hospitals. BDMS also supports the dissemination of this knowledge to international academic forums in the form of academic articles, medical specialist training as well as live broadcasting of surgeries (Live surgery) in collaboration with leading hospitals overseas. This program helps emphasize Thailand’s ability to provide medical treatment, consistent with the national policy of increasing competitiveness towards becoming the world’s medical hub. Currently, there are more than 750 patients who have undergone surgery and have been able to return to their normal lives.

For innovation in telemedicine services, BDMS has developed the BeDee Tele Mental Health in collaboration with the Vejdusit Foundation. This project will expand healthcare opportunities to employees and students in the health sciences program, which will be an important force in the medical service industry in the future. BDMS aims to create personnel with physical energy and strong willpower to deliver medical services and improve the quality of life of the patients efficiently in parallel with the development of medical innovations for society.

As for BDMS Green Healthcare, it recognizes the importance of environmental management to achieve net carbon dioxide emissions from operations to zero by 2050 (BDMS Net Zero 2050). In addition, the BDMS Green Healthcare project emphasizes efficient environmental operations for both hospitals and affiliated businesses. This includes complete waste management for the entire system be it general waste, infectious waste, recyclable waste, using solar energy, appropriate water treatment, also working responsibly with the community and surrounding communities. As of now, there are more than 20 hospitals and businesses in the group that have passed the BDMS Green Healthcare criteria assessment.

Currently, more than 50 percent of hospitals and affiliated businesses can reduce more than 10,000 tons of carbon dioxide emission per year, or equivalent to planting more than 50,000 trees. Building on this success, BDMS aims to evaluate BDMS Green Healthcare and drive forth the alternative energy usage in the hospital areas and its affiliated businesses to reach 100%, while setting a goal to increase the amount of general waste entering the recycling process to more than 26% by 2026.

All the success by far has stemmed from the cooperation of all sectors which are ready to drive the organization towards the same goal. BDMS has an important mission: “Leader in health services that improves well-being on a sustainable path.” This is in line with the principles of sustainable business operations according to the ESG guidelines: environmental, social, and governance. Also, BDMS always focuses on creating valuable experiences for service users through excellence in innovation by reducing inequality in access to health services with standards that are at the international level.
