Microsoft to Bolster Thailand as Regional AI Hub with $1 Billion Investment

On March 31, Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul welcomed Brad Smith, Vice Chairman and President of Microsoft Corporation, and his delegates during their visit to Thailand.

The Prime Minister praised Microsoft’s role in driving innovation, which has supported the advancement of Thailand’s digital sector. He reaffirmed Thailand’s commitment to strengthening cooperation and supporting Microsoft’s operations in the country, in order to enhance Thailand’s digital competitiveness and the efficiency of public services.

Smith expressed Microsoft’s confidence in Thailand, its people, and government. Microsoft plans to announce an additional investment of $1 billion (approximately THB 36 billion) in Thailand over the next two years in cloud and AI infrastructure, as well as collaborations with the Thai private sector and support for workforce development. These initiatives reflect Microsoft’s strong confidence in Thailand’s future.

On this occasion, both parties discussed and exchanged perspectives on investment, with Microsoft planning to invest in Thailand’s cloud and AI infrastructure in alignment with the country’s economic and digital development strategy. The government supports investments in data center infrastructure and encourages Microsoft to use Thailand as a regional hub, given the country’s strategic geographical location at the heart of the region.

Moreover, Smith reaffirmed support for the government’s economic and digital policy initiatives and the development of a long-term partnership with Thailand, aiming to create shared and sustainable benefits.

PM Anutin reiterated the importance of cooperation between Microsoft, the Thai private sector, and the government to position Thailand as a digital hub. He believes these collaborations will play a key role in propelling Thailand to become a regional leader in AI (AI-First Nation).

In conclusion, the Prime Minister emphasized Thailand’s focus on human resource development, especially in education and workforce skills, and expressed gratitude for Microsoft’s commitment to promoting digital and AI skills among Thais—particularly in empowering teachers, upskilling workers, and developing new talent in data centers and technology.

Smith noted that the adoption of AI is increasing rapidly worldwide, especially in Asia and Southeast Asia. Microsoft is ready to support the government through ongoing initiatives, including teacher training, support for non-profit organizations, and the training of government officials to access AI skills.
