Iran Insists on Preconditions before Resuming Nuclear Talks with US

Despite being pressured by several nations, Iran decided that the country would not negotiate with the U.S. regarding its nuclear program until preconditions are met, likely referring to the guarantees of no further attack that Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi previously mentioned.

Prior to the 12-day conflict, Iran had indirect negotiations with the U.S. five times, but the country still refused the U.S. demand to end its domestic uranium enrichment programme. Iran claimed that the program was meant for civilian purposes.

Still, Israel and the U.S. estimated that this program is meant for nuclear weapons development. And last month, Israel launched several attacks on Iran’s nuclear facilities before the U.S. joined in, dropping bunker busters at three locations in this Middle Eastern country.

Nonetheless, Iran remains steadfast. Besides the decision of Iran’s parliament today, Araqchi stated last week that the nation would continue to reject a deal that would deter it from enriching its uranium stockpile and would not discuss any extra-nuclear topics further.

Although the U.S. President Donald Trump stated that he is not worried as the U.S. already “obliterated” Iran’s nuclear sites, the U.S., France, the U.K., and Germany have set a deadline for Iran to make concrete progress by the end of August.

French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot stated if Iran failed to do so, they would request the United Nations Security Council to impose international sanctions on the Middle Eastern country once again.
