After the meeting in Alaska with Russian President Vladimir Putin, the U.S. President Donald Trump wants Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to end the war as soon as possible, saying that there is no reacquisition of Crimea and no joining NATO.
In a post on his Truth Social platform, Trump said “President Zelenskyy of Ukraine can end the war with Russia almost immediately, if he wants to, or he can continue to fight. Remember how it started. No getting back Obama given Crimea (12 years ago, without a shot being fired!), and NO GOING INTO NATO BY UKRAINE. Some things never change!!!”
Details of agreement between Trump and Putin’s meeting on Friday were not disclosed to the public. U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff only announced that Russia has reportedly agreed to a proposal that would allow the United States and European allies to extend NATO-style security assurances, known as Article 5, to Ukraine as part of efforts to halt the ongoing conflict.
NATO’s Article 5 collective defense clause underpins the alliance’s mutual protection pledge, dictating that an armed attack against one member is treated as an attack against all.
Trump is expected to meet President Zelenskyy and leaders from across Europe on Monday to pursue what aides describe as an expedited peace agreement aimed at drawing to a close the bloodiest conflict Europe has seen in generations.
This proposal could be what Ukraine is aiming for, a protection against Russia, disregarding Crimea and an official signing to become NATO’s member. Meanwhile, Russia would satisfy with no expansion of NATO near its border.
