Trump Hits Pharmaceutical, Heavy Truck and Cabinet Imports with New Tariff Hikes

U.S. President Donald Trump has announced that a 100% tariff will be imposed on imported pharmaceutical products effective October 1, unless companies are actively constructing pharmaceutical manufacturing facilities within the United States. The policy grants exemption to firms that have already commenced building, including those projects that have broken ground or are currently underway.

Trump indicated that the forthcoming levy on pharmaceuticals would begin with a modest tariff. Over the subsequent year to eighteen months, he said, the rate would escalate, first rising to 150% before eventually reaching a maximum of 250%.

This latest move comes alongside a series of additional trade protection measures revealed by Trump, including a 25% tariff on heavy trucks and a 50% duty on kitchen cabinets, bathroom vanities, and related goods, also effective from October 1.

President Trump’s announcement marks a sharp escalation in tariffs targeting foreign-made goods, as he seeks to bolster domestic manufacturing. According to Trump, the initiative aims to incentivize pharmaceutical production within the U.S., while placing heavier costs on imported alternatives.
