Thailand Secures Safe Passage for Oil Tankers through Strait of Hormuz

On March 28, 2026, international media reported that Mr. Anutin Charnvirakul, Prime Minister of Thailand, revealed that Thailand has reached an agreement with Iran to allow Thai oil tankers to safely navigate the Strait of Hormuz. This move will help alleviate concerns regarding the country’s energy imports amid the ongoing tensions in the Middle East.

The Thai PM remarked that this progress will reduce worries about imported fuel and boost confidence that supply disruptions, such as what occurred in early March, will not happen again. Mr. Anutin emphasized that the Thai government will continue to closely monitor the situation and adjust various measures to minimize potential impacts on the public as much as possible.

Iran has notified the United Nations Security Council and the International Maritime Organization that vessels from non-hostile countries can pass through the Strait of Hormuz if they coordinate with Iranian authorities and strictly comply with safety requirements.

Previously, an oil tanker belonging to Bangchak Corporation Public Company Limited (SET: BCP) was able to safely pass through the Strait of Hormuz following diplomatic coordination between Thailand and Iran. Thai officials stated that the Iranian side requested that Thailand submit a list of vessels wishing to transit the route to facilitate security arrangements.
