On April 7, 2026, Iranian forces fired ballistic missiles and drones at Jubail Industrial City in Saudi Arabia’s Eastern Province. Although Saudi defenses intercepted much of the attack, debris caused fires near vital petrochemical facilities, prompting emergency measures.
The missiles targeted industrial sites associated with SABIC, a significant international petrochemical producer. Jubail stands as the world’s largest industrial complex, accounting for 7% to 12% of Saudi Arabia’s gross domestic product and about 7% of global petrochemical production. Following the fires and heavy smoke, Saudi officials ordered partial evacuations and temporarily halted plant operations in an effort to safeguard nearby energy infrastructure.
The incident comes amid increased instability in the region, marked by ongoing tensions between the United States and Iran, as well as recent attacks on Iranian gas installations. Industry observers have voiced concerns that prolonged disruptions at Jubail could create widespread uncertainty across global energy markets and drive up oil prices. Further damage to highly specialized chemical and fertilizer factories poses notable risks to worldwide manufacturing supply chains.
