Thailand Suspends Peace Accord with Cambodia Following Landmine Incident

On Tuesday, the National Security Council (NSC) held a meeting to address the landmine incident where two Thai soldiers were injured in Huai Ta Maria, Sisaket Province, on November 10. After the meeting, Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul stated that the Thailand–Cambodia Peace Declaration, which was signed on October 26 in Malaysia, has been “suspended.”

Later, Siripong Angkasakulkiat, spokesperson for the Office of the Prime Minister, announced that the Prime Minister had expressed condolences regarding the incident of Thai soldiers stepping on landmines within Thai territory.

He claimed that the landmines were planted by Cambodian forces, injuring two Thai soldiers—one suffering severe ankle injuries, and the other being struck by shrapnel. While neither soldier lost their life, the Prime Minister noted that such loss should not happen on Thai soil.

Following the meeting, the Prime Minister has ordered, through the Cabinet, that all relevant agencies, including the Ministry of Defence and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, are to suspend the process of peace treaty related to Kuala Lumpur joint declaration indefinitely, until hostilities between Thailand and Cambodia subside, Siripong said.

Furthermore, the Prime Minister ordered the Ministry of Defence to take full military measures to defend Thai territory, and instructed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to lodge a protest, raise objections, and engage in diplomatic communication to convey understanding to other countries, especially to observer groups.

The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Interior was also tasked with educating and informing residents in the seven border provinces to prepare for potential border clashes, ensuring comprehensive care for the people. In addition, the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, Research and Innovation, as well as related agencies, are directed to regularly establish and rehearse emergency shelter plans. The Prime Minister emphasized that all these measures are to be strictly enforced.
