Thai Soldier Injured near Border in Explosion from Cambodian Mortar

On January 6, the 2nd Army Area issued a statement regarding an explosion that injured military personnel in the Chong Bok area, Nam Yuen District, Ubon Ratchathani Province.

The statement disclosed that on 07:25 a.m., the Suranaree Task Force received a report of an explosion in the Chong Bok area, at Hill 469, Dom Pradit Subdistrict, Nam Yuen District, Ubon Ratchathani Province. The incident resulted in one injured soldier, who sustained injuries from shrapnel to his right arm. Medical professionals reaffirmed that it was not a life-threatening injury.

After the incident, local units provided initial field medical care according to procedures, and promptly evacuated the injured out of the operational area for further treatment. The injured was taken to Kud Chiang Mun Subdistrict Health Promoting Hospital and then transferred for further treatment at Nam Yuen Hospital. The wounded soldier is now safe and under close medical supervision.

The cause of the incident is under investigation by the relevant authorities.

Previously, the 2nd Army Area stated via its official Facebook page: “Urgent!!! Cambodia has violated the ceasefire. On January 6, 2026, at 07:25, Cambodian forces fired mortar rounds in the Chong Bok area, in front of Hill 469. As a result, one soldier was injured, sustaining shrapnel wounds. The injured soldier is currently being evacuated for medical treatment. Further details will be provided in due course.”

Reporters also noted that Wasawat Poungponsri, the leader of the Thai Rumphalang Party, posted on his personal Facebook page that at the Chong Bok frontline, an explosion, presumed to be a single round fired from the Cambodian side, struck the Thai military position near Hill 469, despite the ceasefire. He stated it was the Cambodian military that provoked and initiated the attack.
