On 26 November 2025, Mr. Daniel Ross, Chief Investment Officer and Head of Sustainability Development of BTS Group Holdings Public Company Limited (SET: BTS or BTS Group), participated in a panel discussion at the ‘UN Habitat World Sustainable Transport Day – Towards Climate-Just Futures: Decarbonisation in Bangkok Transport’ held at Century Park Hotel.
The event featured participation from Mr. Apichart Suphajitsawat, Director of the Transport System Office, Traffic and Transport Department; Mrs. Anna Catherine Pearson, Economic and Sustainable Development Counsellor of the British Embassy Bangkok; and Mr. Jack Crawford, Economic Affairs Officer, Transport Division, UNESCAP. The discussion highlighted Thailand’s progress in advancing sustainable and inclusive urban mobility, as well as sharing best practices among public transport operators in reducing greenhouse gas emissions and in mitigating environmental impacts.
Mr. Daniel stated that BTS Group, in collaboration with the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration and the Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand, has been jointly developing electric rail systems to encourage a shift toward rail-based travel, encompassing both existing lines and planned future expansions. However, at present, only 13% of trips made by Bangkok residents are by rail—still a low proportion compared with Singapore, where 40–45% of daily travel is through rail systems.
In addition, more than 80% of Thais nationwide continue to rely on private cars, which account for as much as 95% of carbon emissions in the transport sector. In contrast, rail transport represents only 15% of total travel but produces merely 3% of emissions. Therefore, if Thailand works together to significantly increase rail usage, the country could reduce greenhouse gas emissions even further and potentially achieve its Net Zero target sooner than 2050.
Although millions of passengers use BTS SkyTrain services, the MRT Yellow Line, MRT Pink Line, and the Gold Line each year, BTS Group remains committed to working alongside the government to expand and integrate rail networks with all forms of public transport. This aims to encourage more people to shift their travel habits toward rail-based systems.
The Company also places strong emphasis on travel equity, ensuring everyone can access electric rail services. This includes providing reduced fares for students and senior citizens, as well as facilitating accessibility for persons with disabilities at all stations. BTS Group also supports government initiatives to lower the cost of living, helping encourage wider use of electric rail services-an important factor that can also help reduce road accidents.
