Thailand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs reported that at 00:53 on July 27, 2025, Phumtham Wechayachai, the Acting Prime Minister of Thailand, held a phone conversation with President Donald Trump of the United States. During their call, President Trump proposed that Thailand and Cambodia implement an immediate ceasefire.
The Acting Prime Minister expressed his gratitude for the U.S. government’s concern and good intentions, and affirmed that, in principle, Thailand agrees with the ceasefire initiative.
“Nevertheless, Thailand wishes to see genuine intent from the Cambodian side regarding this matter. Therefore, we ask the United States to convey to Cambodia that Thailand would like to hold bilateral talks as soon as possible. This is to jointly determine clear measures and processes for the ceasefire and ultimately achieve a peaceful and sustainable resolution to the dispute,” the Foreign Ministry concluded in its statement (dated July 26, 2025).
Notably, just 12 minutes before the official statement was released, Mr. Phumtham had personally disclosed the details of his conversation with the U.S. President via his personal channel. He stated that he had expressed appreciation for the concern and goodwill from the U.S. government and reiterated Thailand’s agreement, in principle, to a ceasefire—while stressing the need for Cambodia to demonstrate sincere commitment.
“I asked the United States to convey to Cambodia that Thailand desires to engage in bilateral discussions as soon as possible, with Cambodia showing seriousness and sincerity. The goal is to work together to establish clear measures and processes for a ceasefire, paving the way for a peaceful and lasting settlement of the dispute,” he said.
Earlier, Trump posted on his Truth Social platform, warning that the trade negotiation between both countries will be suspended until the ceasefire.
