Thai Deputy PM Urges Cambodia to Cease Violence, Warns of Economic and Humanitarian Consequences

On July 27th , Mr. Pichai Chunhavajira, Thailand’s Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Finance, issued a statement on his personal Facebook page calling on Cambodia to “end the violence and act in the mutual interest of the people in both countries.”

Despite no signs of de-escalation from Cambodia, the Royal Thai Army’s 2nd Region Command has issued a warning for residents to be on high alert. Cambodia reportedly fired long-range PHL-03 missiles capable of reaching up to 130 kilometers, threatening eight Thai provinces: Ubon Ratchathani, Surin, Sisaket, Buri Ram, Yasothon, Roi Et, Maha Sarakham, and Nakhon Ratchasima. Citizens in these areas have been advised to closely monitor updates and be prepared for emergencies.

Mr. Pichai, in his capacity as Minister of Finance, called for Cambodia to “immediately halt all acts of violence to pave the way for diplomatic negotiations, which will lead to sustainable economic and trade cooperation.”

He further emphasized, “Above all, the lives and property of the people must be protected, particularly when attacks have targeted hospitals, schools, gas stations, and convenience stores in multiple areas—civilian zones that must remain inviolate under all circumstances. Such actions constitute grave violations of international law, the UN Charter, and international humanitarian law.”

He went on to stress, “This behavior risks making Cambodia the architect of its own destruction—undermining international confidence and squandering economic opportunities on the global stage. Even more concerning is the credibility crisis faced by Cambodian leaders, who have demonstrated a lack of integrity and continue to attack Thailand, even as of this morning. Peace is the essential precondition for growth, and respect for human life is the foundation of lasting peace.”
