Kim Yo Jong, the sister of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, spoke on behalf of her brother on state media KCNA that no dialogue would end North Korea’s nuclear program, and the U.S. must accept this reality.
U.S. President Donald Trump has been trying to denuclearise North Korea since his first term. Although Trump managed to convince North Korea’s leader to sign an agreement in 2018, the conversation broke down the following year as the two nations could not find a common ground on the subject of removing international sanctions.
On Tuesday, Kim Yo Jong stated that the nation’s nuclear weapons status and geopolitical environment have changed significantly. She added that the relationship between her brother and Trump “is not bad,” but it is futile to utilize it to end its nuclear program. Nonetheless, the White House confirmed that Trump is still committed to his de-nuclearisation goal.
Besides the nuclear weapons status, North Korea’s state media also reported an improvement in its relationship with Russia. For the first time in decades, the direct flights between the two nations have resumed. Russia and North Korea have also been supporting each other. In the Ukraine war, North Korea sent its troops to support Russia in exchange for technology.
