President Donald Trump announced Thursday that Iran’s Supreme Leader has approved a draft agreement between Washington and Tehran, aiming to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and remove the US naval blockade. However, Iranian officials cautioned that no final deal has been reached yet.
Trump highlighted several terms under discussion. He said that once the proposed deal is signed, Washington would lift its naval blockade on Iran. According to Trump, the agreement’s memorandum of understanding has received consent from all necessary Iranian parties. The US military has also canceled a planned operation near Kharg Island as talks progress.
Trump added that an official agreement to reopen the Strait of Hormuz for international shipping could be concluded as early as Saturday or Monday. He did not specify a firm deadline, describing Iran as “rational and confident” that a resolution could be achieved.
Despite President Trump’s statements, Iranian media quoted Foreign Ministry spokesperson Esmaeil Baghaei, who acknowledged that large sections of the agreement’s text were complete but insisted that Iran had not agreed to all proposals and would not cross key points. Tehran maintains that it will adhere to its primary positions before any deal is signed.
