China Shuts Down Nothern City amid Surge in Omicron Variant

Omicron variant intensifies in China as the country’s norther city of Xi’an implemented full scale strict lockdown on Wednesday and tightened travel controls.

The development came at a time when Beijing prepared to host the 2022 Winter Olympics in February, China is on high alert as it fights local outbreak in several cities.

Xi’an on Wednesday reported 52 new cases bringing the total tally to 142 since December 9.

The city government announced only one member of the household are allowed to leave once every two days to purchase essentials.

While residents are ordered not to leave the city unless absolutely necessary and would be required to provide evidence of  “special circumstances” if one seeking to leave the city.
